Nostalgia Super Stock Alive and Well
Over the last few years, drag racing fans have seen a rise in popularity of the nostalgia Top Fuel dragsters, as well as the nostalgia Funny Cars. But race fans shouldn’t forget nostalgia Super Stock; it too is enjoying resurgence, especially in the Midwest. As Doug Duell, of the Nostalgia Super Stock organization will tell you, the class is alive and well. Doug, who resides in Evansville, Indiana, races with the group at most of the major tracks in the Midwest on a regular basis. The organization was originally started by the National Muscle Car Association around 1990 and has since been adopted by various organizations. According to Doug, the class is a pretty big one and draws lots of racers. The biggest draw seems to be the Mopar events; the last one in St Louis drew over 70 cars. When the Nostalgia Super Stock organization got started, Dave, Doug’s dad, became real involved. He was so successful racing a super stock car and so good at promoting the group, that Doug described him as “the ambassador” of the sport. Doug has been a racer almost all his life. He remembers going to his first race with his dad in 1966 when he was five. Dave had taken him to a points meet and Doug was impressed. “I was a track rat. I loved going to the races and seeing all the stars.” Doug grew up watching his dad race his Chrysler sponsored Stock Eliminator throughout the ‘60s. His dad held the NHRA class title record in 1969, 1969, and 1970.
Like many others, Doug just “loves being at the strip with his friends and all the cool cars.” Be sure to visit Nostalgia Super Stocks/Evansville Chrysler.
